Annotations: OpenSeadragon

Introduced in LUNA 7.5.5, support for annotations in LUNA's OpenSeadragon Detail View.

Creating Annotations

Log in, if you don't have a user account you'll need to register one.

Bring the image you want to add an annotation to into the Detail View.

Using the slider from the Detail View tools above, click whether you want to create a private annotation or a collection level annotation. This option is based on the permissions granted to your user account.

Private: only the person who created it can see it.

Collection level: only those with collection level privileges will see this as an option; this option allows the annotation to be viewed by anyone. This option applies to institutional content only, there are no "collection level" saving privileges for annotations made on images from My Uploads

Next, hover the cursor over the Detail View to expose the annotation creation icon Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 2.05.27 PM.png on the right side of the page.

This will display two options, a square Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 2.06.53 PM.png or a polygon Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 2.07.00 PM.png , for the type of annotation box you can create.

Click on the box option once, then click once on the image at the top left corner of the box you intend to draw and drag the mouse to expand the box. Once you have created the box, a small annotation panel will pop up where you can begin typing your annotation. Click the Save button to save your edits.

Viewing Annotations

If a media item has an annotation, you will see this icon displayed above it in the Detail View or Workspace Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 11.54.47 AM.png

Click on the icon, then click “Load all annotations” to expose the location of the annotation(s) on the media item. Click on any of the highlighted ares to open up the annotation. Click “Reset Image” to hide the annotations. When the annotation you have created is open, you will also have the option to edit it.

Annotation information is also displayed in the Media Information panel to the left. To expose it, click the down arrow next to Annotations.

Search Annotations

Annotations are searchable in LUNA by exposing the search options in the search bar, clicking the Annotations radio button and typing in your search term(s).

The result will display in one of two views which you can change by clicking on one of the two icons in the top right corner of the search result.

Masonry View Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 1.42.16 PM.png or Thumbnail View Screen Shot 2024-06-20 at 1.42.25 PM.png

By default the masonry view will display the region of the image(s) where the annotation is highlighted. This works really well for text on images that have been annotated so that a search can be performed on text within an image. You can also switch to the thumbnail view which will display pin points on the image to indicate where the annotation appears.
